Thermal - basics Solar thermal energy is collected in solar panels or solar roofing as heat, which is fed to a water storage tank by circulating water through the panels or roof. The area of solar panels or solar roof is known as the solar collector. A pump/controller unit, generally known as a solar pump station, circulates the water around the system and controls the operation of the various components for maximum efficiency. Systems are generally sized in m2. Output from a solar collector averages around 450kWh from 1m2in a year. Peak output is up to around 650W/m2in full sun. SOLAR WATER HEATING > Typical solar heating systems from us have 6 to 12m2 of solar roof area. A 6m2solar slate system from us will cost around £1300-£1900 plus installation. The output from this will be around 3000kWh/year, saving £175 of electricity, or £140 LPG, or £125 of oil, or £85 of gas at today's prices. SOLAR SPACE HEATING > Typical combined water and space heating systems from us have 20-40m2of solar roof. A 30m2system will cost around £5500 plus installation. The output from this will be around 7,500kWh/year, saving £440 electricity, or £350 LPG, or £315 of oil, or £215 of gas. SOLAR POOL HEATING > Typical swimming pool heating systems have a solar roof area of 50% of the pool area. A 20m2 solar roof system will cost around £3250 plus installation. The output from this will be around 11,000kWh/year, saving £630 electricity, or £520 LPG, or £460 of oil, or £310 of gas. SOLAR PROCESS HEAT > Typically industrial processes use large amounts of hot water for washing or heating. This can be provided either completely or partly by a solar heating roof. |
